RE: Announcement and Invitation to Participate in the Juneteenth
Freedom of Emancipation Celebration 2009 Poster Contest

DATE: May 9, 2009

Greetings from the Corpus Christi Juneteenth Coalition. Annualy since 2005, we celebrate 10 -12 days as a celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the Slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865 at Galveston, Texas. 2009 -a Children and Youth Poster Contest will provide the opportunity for participation in the creative development of a poster expressing their understanding of the journey of the African people, stolen from West Africa and brought to America enslaved, who then were freed in 1863 and 1865 by the Emancipation Proclamation. Texas learned about the freedom, two years after the original Proclamation and slave owners of more than 250,000 slaves had two extra years of free slave labor. We encourage families, churches, groups, schools, to read with or to the children about this, and to participate in the many activities of the Juneteenth Celebration to learn about this, and participate in the Poster Contest. This will occur at the Solomon M. Coles Alternative High School on Winnebago which was the first (and for several decades, the only) school for Negroes south of Houston.

The calendar of activities is included here. The first activity is on June 9. 2009 at 9:00 a.m. at Solomon M. Coles Alternative High School. At that activity children and families will sign up to participate in the contest. Sign up will be daily at Solomon M. Coles Alternative School in the Dr. Willie B. Scott Memorabilia Room 9:00 am – 3:30 p.m; and at every event. All that is required is to sign up. ALL CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN COASTAL BEND ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE.

On June 17, at Solomon M. Coles Alternative High School at 10:00 a.m., all interested registered children and youth will come and draw their posters. They will have one hour to develop their poster. Then the posters will be judged and the prizes awarded.

There are four prizes as follows: First Prize in each category $100-Children Grades 1-6 ( 2008-2009); $100 Youth Grades 7-12 ( 2008-2009). Second Prize in each Category $50. Total $300 in Prizes .
